JACK & JILL

Spooky Westie Weekend is officially sanctioned by the World Swing Dance Council (WSDC) to offer points and is formally a part of the competition circuit!

Jack & Jill contests are a fun way to allow individuals to enter competition without a partner and challenge their social dancing prowess with a variety of partners. There is an inherent “luck of the draw” factor involved. Leaders and followers are randomly paired.

Competitors are scored individually on timing, technique and teamwork in the preliminary heats. Those scoring the highest will be called back later to dance in a final round. In the final, individuals are randomly paired, then scored as a couple. The DJ picks the music.

Competitors may compete in a maximum of two (2) skill level WSDC Jack and Jill competitions, once in their primary role and once in their secondary role, with limitations due to approved exceptions. Competitors must maintain their selected role, either as a Leader or Follower, during a Jack and Jill contest. No switching.

WSDC JACK & JILL LEVELS

The World Swing Dance Council Points Registry is used to determine eligibility for the West Coast Swing Jack & Jill divisions. The only way you may enter a division other than by meeting the points qualifications below is by petitioning the chief judge or event director before the competition.

The Spooky Westie Weekend offers 4 levels of Jack & Jills – Newcomer, Novice, Intermediate & Advanced-AllStar.

Newcomer
New dancers who want to ‘get their feet wet’ and are new to JnJ competitions. This division is open to anyone who does not have any WSDC Novice points.

Novice
Competitors who have been dancing actively and have less than 16 points in Novice.

Intermediate
Competitors who have 17 Novice points and more, but less than 30 Intermediate points should compete in this division.

Advanced / All-Star
Competitors who have more than 30+ Intermediate points and less than 60 Advanced points.

SPOOKY STRICTLY SWING

The Spooky Strictly Swing (SSS) is the highlight of the weekend!

Competitors must register with a partner. We want the SSS to be about the costumes, the fun of dancing and the theme! So we are enforcing a high-low rule for partnership:

  • Intermediate, Advanced and All-Star dancers must partner a Novice dancer.
  • Novice dancers can partner anyone.

Judges will evaluate couples based on the following criteria:

  • 50% – Theatrics, showmanship costume and ‘dancing in theme’
  • 50% – West Coast Swing Timing, Technique and Teamwork

CHANGE TO SSS FORMAT

SWW25 sees a significant format change for the Spooky Strictly Swing.

Spooky Strictly Swing will be 1 round and straight to finals. All competitors will get to showcase their costumes and cool gimmicks in a semi-spotlight format, and judges will rank based on that. We are changing the format to allow all competitors to prepare their costumes and gimmicks for just 1 dance.

*Costumes are mandatory.
*Lifts are allowed.

SWITCH JACK & JILL

This is an ‘Open’ Jack & Jill that welcomes competitors from all divisions. It will run similar to a regular Jack & Jill, with the defining difference being that participants have to switch between the ‘leader’ and ‘follower’ roles.

This Jack & Jill is judged based on a competitors’ ability to dance both roles, as well as to seamlessly switch between leading and following with their partners.

In addition to the regular judging criteria, competitors are also judged on the smoothness, complexity and frequency of their switches.

You enter the contest as an individual, and partners are randomly drawn.
